Pathology of the Sports Coach Maintenance System in Iran

Abstract
Introduction:
Coaches are considered the most important factor in the success of athletes, and the education, training, and retention of coaches in the sports system should be at the top of sports priorities. Roberts et al. (2020) identified the most important factors for leaving the coaching profession in English grassroots football in a field study, including lack of organizational support, inadequate pay, and psychological stress. They suggested that appropriate human resource policies could help improve coach retention. So, the aim of the present study was to pathology the sports coach maintenance system in Iran.
Methods:
The present study was a qualitative study conducted using thematic analysis. The statistical population of the study included experts and specialists familiar with the field of sports coaching in Iran. Sampling was purposefully conducted considering the qualitative nature of the research, which was conducted up to 18 people until theoretical saturation was reached. The instrument of the present study was a semi-structured interview. In this study, thematic analysis method was used to analyze the data.
Results:
In the area of sports coach retention, challenges were identified and categorized into the main themes of performance evaluation, interpersonal relationships, salaries and rewards, injustice and discrimination, opportunity for advancement, welfare matters, organizational and social support, nature of the job, job satisfaction, and respect for coaches and veterans.
Conclusion:
The Ministry of Sports and sports federations and boards should view sports coaching as a difficult and valuable job and profession, and place more value on it, and by increasing salaries, benefits, rewards, and organizational support for coaches, they should enhance the commitment, security, and job satisfaction of sports coaches.
