Abstract
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, usually of five players each, face each other on a rectangular court. Achievement motivation or the need to succeed is a psychological drive for excellence that is a social form of motivation to perform at a high level of competence (Rossati & Kenyeh, 2023). The term “attention” is used in the human performance literature to refer to the engagement in perceptual, cognitive, and motor activities of skill execution (James, 1980). The purpose of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of extrinsic attention style on motivation in basketball players.
Methods: Random sampling was carried out from the statistical population of male basketball players in Karaj. The research design is semi-experimental, pre-test, post-test with a control group. Out of 97 volunteers, 45 male basketball players with inclusion criteria were selected through purposive sampling and assigned to two groups based on random sampling. To assess achievement motivation, Bernard Wine's Achievement Motivation Questionnaire was used. Wine, which was first distributed to both groups, and then external attention training programs were held for thirty-six 90-minute sessions (12 weeks) for the test groups. Finally, a post-test was taken from both groups after a three-month interval. The collected data was entered into the SPSS-22 program and finally analyzed using covariance statistical tests.
Results: The results showed a significant difference between the effect of the external method on the achievement motivation variable scores (P<0.05).
Conclusion: It is concluded that the external attention method can be used to increase motivation for progress in basketball.
