Abstract
Introduction:
One of the most common team sports among athletes with lower limb disabilities is sitting volleyball. Players overuse their upper limbs to achieve a higher level of athletic performance and compensate for possible lower limb deficiencies, resulting in a higher incidence and risk of upper limb injuries of varying severity during training and competition.
Methods:
In the present study, 33 players aged 20 to 55 with more than 4 years of experience in the Iranian Premier League participated. Injury report forms were completed by interviews the players. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (CROSSTAB) and SPSS software. The Shapiro–Wilk test was applied to assess the normality of data distribution, and the Spearman correlation test was used to examine the relationship between variables at a significance level of p ≤ 0.05.
Results:
A total of 75 injuries were recorded among players who had 16 weeks of training and 8 weeks of competition. According to the results, the most frequent time of injury occurrence was during training (57.6%), with moderate (29.4%) and severe (40%) severity, and a moderate and positive correlation (r=0.48) was also found between the severity of the injury and the time of injury occurrence.
Conclusion:
The higher incidence of injuries during training may be attributed to the intensive and prolonged nature of the sessions and the overuse of the upper limbs. Meanwhile, the greater severity of injuries during competition may result from the higher demands and psychological pressure of matches. In this study, a moderate correlation was found between injury severity and the time of occurrence, indicating the need for further research with a larger sample size to obtain more precise results. Ultimately, this information can help coaches and therapists understand when and how injuries are likely to occur and develop effective preventive and corrective strategies.
