Abstract
Abstract
Background:
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder and the fourth most common neurological disease worldwide, mainly characterized by recurrent seizures. Inflammation contributes to increased neuronal excitability and seizure severity. Interleukin-10 (IL-10), an anti-inflammatory cytokine, plays a crucial role in limiting neuroinflammation and neuronal damage. This study aimed to compare the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on IL-10 expression and seizure severity in an experimental model of epilepsy.
Methods:
Forty male Wistar rats (250 g, 4–6 weeks old) were randomly assigned to five groups: Epilepsy+HIIT, Epilepsy+MICT, Epilepsy, Sham, and Control. Epilepsy was induced via intrahippocampal injection of 1 μg kainic acid under stereotaxic guidance. Exercise training was performed for eight weeks, five days per week, 40 minutes per session. The HIIT protocol included 20 bouts of running and rest at 90% and 30% of maximal velocity (Vmax), respectively, while the MICT group ran continuously at 60% Vmax. At the end of the training period, hippocampal tissue was collected to measure IL-10 protein levels using Western blot, and seizure severity was assessed in weeks 4 and 8.
Results:
HIIT significantly increased IL-10 levels and reduced seizure severity (P<0.05), whereas MICT only decreased seizure severity without significantly affecting IL-10 expression.
Conclusion:
High-intensity interval training enhances IL-10 expression and reduces seizure severity, indicating potent anti-inflammatory effects and suggesting its potential as a complementary intervention for epilepsy management.
