| Introduction:This study aimed to investigate the effect of parenting styles on perceived motor competence among elementary school students. Since parenting behaviors influence children’s confidence and motivation in physical activities, understanding these relationships can help design family-centered programs that foster positive motor self-perception. Methods: An applied descriptive-correlational design was used. The population included male and female elementary students in Tehran, and 172 students were selected using cluster random sampling with G*Power software. Data were gathered through Baumrind’s Parenting Style Questionnaire (permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative) and the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire by Marsh (1992), focusing on perceived motor competence. Statistical analyses included one-way ANOVA with Scheffé post hoc tests and independent t-tests for gender comparisons, using SPSS version 26. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: Results showed significant differences in perceived motor competence among parenting styles (p < 0.05). Scheffé analysis revealed that children of permissive parents reported higher perceived motor competence than those of authoritative parents (mean difference = 4.506, p < 0.05). No other significant group differences were found. Independent t-test results indicated that boys had significantly higher perceived motor competence than girls (mean difference = -4.829, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Parenting style and gender were found to be key predictors of children’s perceived motor competence. These findings highlight the importance of family environment and gender-sensitive strategies in promoting children’s physical activity participation and motor self-confidence. |
