Abstract
Introduction: Understanding sports spaces extends far beyond their physical form and functional attributes; rather, they serve as a reflection of prevailing power relations, cultural norms, and gender structures within society. Employing an anthropological and interdisciplinary approach, this study examines the interplay between gender, spatial experience, and governance mechanisms in sports environments. The primary objective is to identify disparities in the perceptions and experiences of women and men regarding sports spaces, as well as the impact of these differences on decision-making processes, design principles, and management practices.
Methods: The research adopts a descriptive-survey and qualitative-interpretive methodology. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with female and male users of an urban sports complex.
Results: Findings reveal that gendered perceptions play a pivotal role in shaping feelings of safety, belonging, and participation in sports spaces, yet these perceptual differences are frequently overlooked in policy formulation and architectural design.
Conclusion: Accordingly, it is recommended that sports governance models be restructured based on principles of spatial justice, gender-inclusive participation, and anthropological insights to facilitate the creation and management of more inclusive sports environments.
