Abstract
Introduction: The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the impact of media consumption on the sports behavior of students in schools of Guilan Province.
Methods: This study was applied in purpose and descriptive-survey in terms of data collection method. The statistical population included all students at various educational levels in schools of Guilan Province. Using convenience sampling and considering the requirements for structural equation modeling, a statistical sample of 176 students who had completed the questionnaires in full was selected. The data collection tools were standardized questionnaires in the field of sports behavior and media consumption using a five-point Likert scale. The content and face validity of the questionnaires were confirmed by 13 professors of sports management and experts. Reliability and construct validity were also established through confirmatory factor analysis in Smart PLS 3 software.
Results: The path analysis results showed that overall media consumption has a significant negative effect on students' sports behavior (Effect Coefficient: -0.45, t-value = 8.67). Consumption of sports-related and entertainment content had a significant positive effect on sports behavior (Effect Coefficient: 0.60, t-value = 8.63). In contrast, consumption of general content (Effect Coefficient: -0.53, t-value = 7.62) and educational content (Effect Coefficient: -0.45, t-value = 7.85) showed a significant negative effect on sports behavior.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that although general media consumption can lead to a decrease in the physical activity of students, guiding media consumption towards specialized sports content and healthy entertainment can reverse this trend and even lead to an improvement in sports behavior. Accordingly, it is suggested that families, school administrators, and sports coaches facilitate students' familiarity with the benefits of physical activity and the optimal, targeted use of media especially for following sports-related pages and content by holding instructional workshops.
