Identification of Drivers for the Development of Technology and Digitalization in the Future of Sports Tourism

Abstract
Introduction: Few studies address digital drivers in sport tourism despite its vital economic and social role in globalization. (Никитенко, 2018). Quantitative research has examined digital drivers in sport tourism, yet this analytical–exploratory study fills a key gap by showing that sport tourism fosters economic growth, social mobility, and self-actualization.(Haboub, 2025). Digitalization has transformed tourists’ behavior and heightened the demand for interactive innovations, with technology enhancing the competitiveness of businesses(Thees et al., 2021).
Methods:
This applied study adopted an analytical–exploratory approach. Data were first gathered through a literature review, followed by semi-structured interviews with 18 sport tourism experts selected via purposive sampling. The interviews aimed to identify key factors shaping the future of sport tourism. Data analysis was conducted using an interaction effects matrix and MICMAC software to determine the main drivers. Expert review and feedback ensured the validity and reliability of the findings.
Results:
The findings indicated that technology and digitalization play a crucial role in advancing sport tourism. Digital tools enhance event management, promotion, and service quality while simplifying booking and information access. Innovations such as live streaming, virtual tours, and VR/AR create immersive experiences for tourists. Moreover, artificial intelligence supports the sustainability of sports activities, positioning these technologies as key drivers of sport tourism development.
Conclusion:
Technology and digitalization drive the growth of sport tourism by enhancing accessibility, interactivity, and safety. Investing in digital innovations is essential for ensuring the sector’s sustainability and long-term attractiveness.
