| Introduction: The PETTLEP model is a comprehensive framework that addresses the improvement of sports performance through mental imagery with respect to physical, environmental, and psychological characteristics. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze the effect of PETTLEP mental imagery on sports performance in healthy individuals in Iran. Methods: This study was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. The online databases Normags, MagIran, and the Jihad Daneshgahi Scientific Center were searched. Of the 47 studies, 21 were excluded due to being irrelevant or duplicated, and 13 articles were excluded due to not focusing on healthy subjects (MS patients (6), elderly men (4), children with developmental disabilities and blindness (3)). 13 studies (with 604 participants) met the inclusion criteria. Results: These studies examined sports performance across various disciplines: badminton (2), basketball (3), handball (2), darts (2), swimming (1), and equestrian (1). Most combined traditional mental imagery with physical exercise using the PETTLEP method, while only three studies used PETTLEP alone. Interventions typically lasted 6 weeks. The components of the PETLAP model can effectively increase the effectiveness of mental imagery on athletic performance. A comparative study found greater motor function improvements in boys than girls with PETTLEP. Benefits included decreased reaction time and enhanced movement sense, with recommendations to perform PETTLEP before bed. The method promotes skill transfer and retention, especially when combined with physical training. However, limited research on psychological factors exists, with only two studies addressing PETTLEP's impact on anxiety and self-esteem, highlighting a need for further investigation. Conclusion: As a comprehensive solution in sports training and practice, the PETTLEP model not only improves overall sports performance and the mental state of athletes, but also helps facilitate learning and transfer of skills. Therefore, using this model can be considered a fundamental approach in designing athletes' training and psychological programs. |
