| Abstract |
| Introduction: The rise of reputational crises in sports has made managing reputational risks a strategic necessity rather than merely a concern that is coped with at the periphery. Through the use of a systematic scoping review, this paper maps and synthesizes the determining critical factors of effective reputational risk management in sports organizations. Methods: Using the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, the literature from 2015 to 2025 was analyzed through systematic searches in the Web of Science, Scopus, and the leading sports management journals ending with the analysis of 19 publications that were found relevant. Results: The synthesis shows that successful management of the reputational risk in sports is dependent on the dynamic interplay of five critical factors: crisis and communication strategies, governance capacity, and organization, external stakeholder relationships, crisis-specific attributes, and core risk management processes. All these elements work together in an integrated system where organizational governance is the bedrock of the efficient crisis response, while stakeholder points of view and crisis attributes define the communication strategies. The study calls attention to the fact that organizations cannot solely rely on reactive approaches but must also implement institutionalization of risk monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and preparedness planning as the hallmark of resilient sports organizations. Conclusion: The review offers a framework grounded in evidence that categorizes reputational risk management as a multi-faceted, systemic skill rather than a mere series of isolated tasks. The implications of the findings are that they provide the sports managers with a comprehensive model for establishing reputationally resilient sports organizations. |
