Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is the major risk factor for many common diseases in the world. Leptin is a hormone produced by the obesity gene. Leptin is an important indicator in energy and metabolism regulation that also affects body weight. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of eight weeks of HIIT on plasma leptin levels and body composition in obese women.
Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental. For this purpose, 40 obese and healthy women with a mean age of 33.16±3.68 years and a body mass index of 32.19±2.11 kg/m2 were selected based on the inclusion criteria and by random sampling. The samples were randomly assigned to two HIIT groups (n=20) and control (n=20). The HIIT intervention (80-90% of maximum heart rate) was performed for eight weeks, three sessions per week. Blood samples were taken before and 24 hours after the last training session in a 12-hour fasting state to determine plasma leptin levels. Body composition indices were analyzed using the InBody device. Data were analyzed using independent t-test and paired t-test at a significance level of α = 0.05.
Results: The results showed that leptin levels were significantly reduced (p = 0.002) after eight weeks of HIIT compared to the control group. In addition, body weight, body mass index and body fat percentage showed significant decreases after eight weeks of HIIT (p < 0.05). Significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of leptin, body weight, body mass index and body fat percentage means (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Overall, it seems that the reduction in leptin after eight weeks of HIIT is associated with improvements in body composition indices. HIIT is likely to be a useful and effective training method in regulating adipose tissue function.
