| Introduction: Chronic low back pain is a major health concern for elderly women, frequently leading to diminished quality of life and functional disability. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the effect of virtual reality (VR)-based exercise on managing chronic low back pain in this specific population. Methods: A comprehensive search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared VR-based exercise with conventional interventions or control groups in elderly women with chronic low back pain. The primary outcome measures were changes in pain intensity, measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and functional disability, assessed by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Results: The meta-analysis of 15 eligible studies, involving 1,200 participants, demonstrated that VR exercise led to a statistically significant reduction in pain intensity (Standardized Mean Difference [SMD]: -0.8; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: -1.1 to -0.5) and functional disability (SMD: -0.7; 95% CI: -0.9 to -0.5) compared to control groups. The interventions also showed significant improvements in secondary outcomes, including balance and health-related quality of life. Conclusion: Virtual reality-based exercise is an effective intervention for reducing pain and improving function in elderly women with chronic low back pain. By providing an engaging and safe training environment, this technology can be considered a valuable supplement to or replacement for conventional rehabilitation programs. |
