Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: The present study aimed to investigate the status of physical education and sports activities among students with an emphasis on gender differences.Recently, the decline in physical activity among young people, especially in universities, has become a concern in the public health and higher education (Griban et al., 2020). Since sports, in addition to playing a key role in physical health, are effective in promoting mental health, strengthening social interactions and increasing students’ academic performance, it seems necessary to understand the current situation and factors affecting sports participation of male and female students.
Methods: This research was descriptive-analytical and conducted using a questionnaire method, regarding physical activity and attitude towards exercise. The statistical population included all male and female students of the university under study, from whom a sample was randomly selected.
Results: The results showed that the average level of physical activity among male students was significantly higher than that of female students. Although both groups had a positive attitude towards sports, the barriers to participation among them were different; with girls most likely to mention the lack of facilities specifically for women, cultural restrictions, and academic pressure, while boys were more likely to face time constraints and a lack of regular sports programs.
Conclusion: with girls most likely to mention the lack of facilities specifically for women, cultural restrictions, and academic pressure, while boys were more likely to face time constraints and a lack of regular sports programs. Based on the findings, strengthening the culture of sports among students, developing sports spaces appropriate to the needs of both sexes, and incorporating physical activity into daily university programs are among the solutions proposed by this study.
